Additional Background
Information
The process
of communication often requires people to pass on information
in the form of a presentation. It is a crucial skill that
people in all companies, large or small, will undoubtedly
require. It is a problem that the thought of delivering a
presentation strikes fear in the heart of the individual!
Legs turn to jelly and complexions turn pale at the thought,
never mind the practice! This problem affects 99% of the world's
professional population and needs to be dealt with. So why
does the thought of delivering a presentation cause people
so much concern? The answer is simple. The moment presenters
stand up, they become highly visible and vulnerable. A lot
is expected from a presenter, regardless of the context and
a bad performance is costly. Audiences know it and presenters
know it.
Unfortunately,
practice tends to reinforce these negative feelings. People
always believe they have done worse than they actually did,
in spite of encouraging comments from supportive colleagues.
The answer to the problem is thorough training, which shows
the presenter how to research, including ensuring that the
content is correct for the audience, plan and deliver the
presentation to the best of their ability.
This training
programme allows students to practice their skills in a safe
environment. To this end the students will be asked to prepare
a five minute presentation prior to joining the course. This
will be presented during the first day of the course. This
presentation will be captured on video. They will then be
asked to make the same presentation towards the end of the
second day. Again this will be captured on video and will
serve as a before and after as the students will each received
a copy of the tape. This serves to give the extra confidence
that is required as they can clearly see the improvement they
have made and also acts as an indicator to the areas where
improvement is still required.
